***PRESS RELEASE FROM WAUWATOSA EAST HS**
Wauwatosa East HS has announced that former Assistant Coach Mary Merg will take over as the new varsity girls basketball head coach. Previous Head Coach Brian Hendricks left mid-August to take a new full time position at DSHA, which also happened to have a varsity head coach opening, which he took as well. Merg, who was named head coach at Greenfield HS earlier this summer, left that position to take over the head coaching job at Tosa East where she is also a school counselor.
“We are excited to have Coach Merg back on the staff and ready to go and move our girls basketball program forward,” Athletic Director Michelle Guyant-Holloway stated. “She has a great deal of knowledge, as a player and as a coach, and has a tremendous amount of passion and desire to build the program even more than where its at currently.”
Merg was the varsity assistant last season at East with Hendricks. Prior to that, she was a graduate assistant at Stanford for two years under legendary and hall of fame coach Tara Vandaveer. She started her coaching career at St. Mary’s in Minnesota and coached club after her playing career at UW-Whitewater, where she holds the record as all-time leading scorer.
